True Luxury Design:

Modernist-Style Homes

The style of architecture often described as “modern” or “modernist” does not follow strict structure as does Mediterranean or Greek architecture, but is more a loose collection of various styles that embraces a “rational” use of modern materials. Developed and executed between 1940 and the 1970’s, modernist design seeks to reject the frivolous ornamentation of classical architecture — arches and columns and hand-carved details — and instead focuses on the function of the structure, believing that the design should reflect the purpose of the building.

Stunning Architectural Features

Exterior Architecture

Though style between modern homes various greatly, they share many common and highly-identifiable features, including:

  • Simplicity of form seen in straight horizontal and vertical lines, 90-degree angles, and cubic or cylindrical shapes
  • Flat roofs
  • Metal and glass frameworks allowing for large windows
  • Asymmetric compositions
  • “Truth to materials”, meaning that the appearance of materials aren’t covered or disguised

Interior Architecture

Again, the interior features of modernist homes vary greatly, but they do share some commonalities, including:

  • Open floor plans
  • Expansive walls of windows, sliding glass doors
  • Tile and stone floors
  • Custom chef’s kitchens boasting the latest state-of-the-art appliances and amenities

Decorate Your Home to Complement a Modernism Style

When decorating a modernist home, it’s important to match the architectural style with complementing interior design. The focus of modern decor is the same as in its architecture — functionality, clean lines, and simplicity. This means solid colors consisting mostly of muted neutrals with occasional bold pops of colors such as orange, yellow, olive green, or chocolate brown. It means furniture with basic shapes and forms, often low to the ground and featuring metal frames and straight legs. And it means modern artwork, which is, again, simple, usually featuring graphic shapes and elements, solid colors, and clean lines.
